Based on a multi-faceted reading of the case of South Australia’s development since the beginning of European settlement in 1836, this illustrated essay aims to discuss the types and designs of buildings provided by the government in the early SA between 1836-1880, and explore how Adelaide’s Old Parliament House, as one of the most important early public buildings in Adelaide, materialises political innovation and social reform, contributes to the building of a new society, and reproduces the norms and forms of the “Old World”.
